Did you know that according to Human Health & Services that 1 in 5 kids has a disability? Many of those disabilities we can't see or recognize. Thoughtful design asks questions of teachers, staff, OT/PT and behavioral specialists to understand the range of disabilities and how to ensure that all kids are comfortable heading outdoors.
Think about light, glare, noise, movement, shadow patterns in spaces we move through....these all contribute to inviting people into the space and successfully moving through it. Personally, this type of space would be difficult for some people to move through given the shadow patterns and patterns of light/dark.
There are some great professionals in every school district who are amazing resources to identify disabilities and challenges so that don't unintentionally create a barrier for one of the users.
